Richard Kershaw, the master of wine

Richard Kershaw is een Britse wijnmaker die in 1999 naar Zuid-Afrika emigreerde om zich daar volledig op het wijnmaken te richten. Kershaw beheerst zowel de theoretische als de praktische kant van het wijnmaken en dat heeft enorm bijgedragen aan de goede naam die zijn wijnhuis draagt. Hij mag zich rekenen tot de selecte groep van de Masters of Wine. Slechts enkele honderden mensen op de wereld hebben dit prestigieuze diploma op zak. In 2012 richtte Richard Kershaw Kershaw Wines, zijn eigen wijnhuis, op in de Elgin regio.

De exclusieve GPS-serie (Grape Positioning System) is daarvan het spannende en indrukwekkende resultaat.  Voor zijn GPS Syrah vond Richard uitermate geschikte wijngaarden in Klein River, een zogenaamde ward in het district Overberg.

De koelste regio van Afrika

Op zo’n 10 kilometer van de oceaan ligt de Elgin regio. Het is één van de koelste stukjes Afrika en dat komt de druiven alleen maar ten goede. Het grote verschil tussen de dag- en nachttemperatuur zorgt er voor dat de druiven overdag rijpen in de zon en ‘s nachts fris blijven door de lage temperatuur. 

Kershaw wines: complex en verfrissend

De uitstekende omstandigheden in de Elgin regio in combinatie met het inzicht van Richard Kershaw produceren complexe en verfrissende wijnen. Ze zijn intens, maar elegant. Ze kenmerken zich door een afgewogen balans en mooie, lange afdronk.

Zodra de wijnen liggen worden ze zo min mogelijk verstoord met allerlei ingrepen. Richard Kershaw is altijd op zoek naar slimme alternatieven voor bestaande methodes die gebruikt worden bij het wijnmaken. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is het gebruik van diepgevroren blokken koolzuurgas. Deze gebruikt hij om bepaalde delicate wijnen mee door te roeren. De bubbels van het gas zorgen voor beweging in de wijn zonder dat er zuurstof bij komt.
